That subdirectory is laid 5out as follows: 6 7.../NetBSD-_VER/amiga/ 8 INSTALL Installation notes; this file. 9 10 binary/ 11 kernel/ The GENERIC kernel. 12 13 sets/ Amiga binary distribution sets; 14 see below. 15 16 Split/ .tgz files split for loading onto 17 floppies. 18 19 security/ Amiga security distribution; 20 see below; 21 22 installation/ 23 miniroot/ Amiga miniroot file system 24 image; see below. 25 26 misc/ Miscellaneous Amiga 27 installation utilities; see 28 installation section, below. 29 30The Amiga now uses a single miniroot filesystem for both an initial 31installation and for an upgrade. A gzipped version is available, for easier 32downloading. (The gzipped version have the ".gz" extension added to 33their names.) 34 35Miniroot file system: 36 37 This file contains a BSD root file system setup to help you 38 install the rest of NetBSD or to upgrade a previous version of 39 NetBSD. This includes formatting and mounting your root and 40 /usr partitions and getting ready to extract (and possibly first 41 fetching) the distribution sets. There is enough on this file 42 system to allow you to make a SLIP or PPP connection, configure 43 an Ethernet, mount an NFS file system or ftp. You can also load 44 distribution sets from a SCSI tape or from one of your existing 45 AmigaDOS partitions. 46 47 This file is named "miniroot.fs". 48 49The NetBSD/Amiga binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 50comprise the NetBSD _VER release for the Amiga. There are seven standard 51binary distribution sets, 5 X11 distribution sets, and the "security" 52distribution set. The standard and X11 binary distribution sets can be 53found in the "amiga/binary/sets" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER 54distribution tree, and are as follows: 55 56 base The NetBSD/Amiga _VER base binary distribution. You 57 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 58 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 59 system to run and be minimally functional. It 60 includes shared library support, and excludes 61 everything described below. 62 [ 8.7M gzipped, 25.2M uncompressed ] 63 64 comp The NetBSD/Amiga Compiler tools. All of the tools 65 relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!). 66 This set includes the system include files 67 (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain, 68 and the various system libraries (except the shared 69 libraries, which are included as part of the base 70 set). This set also includes the manual pages for all 71 of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 72 call and library manual pages. 73 [ 6.5M gzipped, 22.9M uncompressed ] 74 75 etc This distribution set contains the system 76 configuration files that reside in /etc and in several 77 other places. This set MUST be installed if you are 78 installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be 79 used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading, 80 it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and 81 CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.) 82 [ 52K gzipped, 320K uncompressed ] 83 84 games This set includes the games and their manual pages. 85 [ 2.8M gzipped, 7.2M uncompressed ] 86 87 man This set includes all of the manual pages for the 88 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 89 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 90 that are included in the other sets. 91 [ 2.4M gzipped, 10.0M uncompressed ] 92 93 misc This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 94 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 95 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 96 installed from the source tree by default. 97 [ 2.1M gzipped, 8.1M uncompressed ] 98 99 text This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 100 including groff, all related programs, and their 101 manual pages. 102 [ 960K gzipped, 3.7M uncompressed ] 103 104 xbase The basic files needed for a complete X 105 client environment. This does not include 106 the X servers. 107 [ 2.4M gzipped, 7.4M uncompressed ] 108 109 xcomp The extra libraries and include files needed 110 to compile X source code. 111 [ 1.6M gzipped, 6.7M uncompressed ] 112 113 xcontrib Programs that were contributed to X. 114 [ 178k gzipped, 670k uncompressed ] 115 116 xfont Fonts needed by X. 117 [ 5.7M gzipped, 7M uncompressed ] 118 119 xserver Amiga X servers. 120 [ 1.5M gzipped, 3.7M unzipped ] 121 122The Amiga security distribution set is named "secr" and can be found in 123the "amiga/binary/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER 124distribution tree. It contains security related binaries which depend 125on cryptographic source code. You do not need this distribution set to 126use encrypted passwords in your password file; the "base" distribution 127includes a crypt library which can perform only the decryption 128function. The security distribution includes a version of the 129Kerberos IV network security system, and a Kerberized version of the 130"telnet" program. The "secr" distribution set can be found only on 131those sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and which can 132legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, it may 133not be legal to distribute this set to locations outside of the United 134States and Canada.) 135 [ 798K gzipped, 2.4M uncompressed ] 136 137The Amiga binary distribution sets are distributed as gzipped tar files 138named with the extension ".tgz", e.g. "base.tgz". They are also 139available in split form -- catted together, the members of a split set 140form a gzipped tar file. Each Amiga binary distribution set also has 141its own checksum files, just as the source distribution sets do. 142 143The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally 144well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that 145method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That 146is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e. 147replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xfp" 148from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those 149programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced unless 150you run "tar" with the "--unlink" option. If you follow the normal 151installation or upgrade procedures, this will be taken care of for 152you. 153
