1.8 mikel The i386-specific portion of the NetBSD _VER release is found in the
1.1 cgd "i386" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid
   1.1 cgd out as follows:
   1.1 cgd
   1.8 mikel .../NetBSD-_VER/i386/

   1.5 perry
1.11 perry There are two i386 floppy images, named "boot.fs" and "boot-small.fs",
1.12 fvdl in the "i386/installation/floppy" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER
1.11 perry distribution. These are 1.44M and 1.2M floppy disk images
1.11 perry (respectively). These floppies are bootable, and are used both for
1.11 perry installations and for upgrades. They are described in more detail
1.11 perry below. There are also gzipped version of these floppies (named with
  1.11 perry ".fs.gz") available.
   1.5 perry
  1.11 perry Bootable installation/upgrade floppies:
  1.11 perry
1.11 perry These disks are bootable, and contains the software necessary
1.5 perry to prepare your hard drive for NetBSD and install the NetBSD
1.7 perry distribution, or to upgrading an already installed
1.7 perry system from a previous version of NetBSD.
   1.5 perry
1.7 perry Unlike previous NetBSD releases, there are no separate "kernel
1.7 perry copy" floppies or "upgrade" floppies. Instead, the install
1.7 perry floppy contains only a special compressed kernel with a built
1.7 perry in ramdisk image of the installation/upgrade file
1.7 perry system. There is also no longer any need to use a different
1.7 perry boot floppy for Adaptec and Buslogic based systems.
   1.5 perry
1.11 perry The only difference between the "boot.fs" and "boot-small.fs"
1.11 perry floppies is that the 1.2M "boot-small.fs" image does not
1.11 perry contain support for PCMCIA or PCI devices so that it can be
1.11 perry fit on a 1.2M floppy suitable for use on older systems.
  1.11 perry
1.11 perry Because the kernel on the installation disks is not suitable
1.5 perry for use beyond initial installation and configuration, a
1.6 perry "generic" kernel has been placed in a distribution set named
1.11 perry "kern". This kernel is intended to run your system while
1.6 perry you build a custom kernel. It is strongly encouraged that you
1.6 perry build a custom kernel for your installation rather than use
1.6 perry the prebuilt generic kernel on a long term basis.
   1.5 perry
1.5 perry Please note that because of space considerations the kernels
1.5 perry booted from the installation floppies do not contain drivers
1.5 perry that are not needed during installation -- in particular, no
1.5 perry drivers needed to run the X Window System are available in
   1.5 perry these kernels.
   1.5 perry
1.1 cgd The NetBSD/i386 binary distribution sets contain the binaries which
1.8 mikel comprise the NetBSD _VER release for the i386. There are eight binary
1.6 perry distribution sets and the "security" distribution set. The binary
1.11 perry distribution sets can be found in the "i386/binary/sets" subdirectory
1.11 perry of the NetBSD _VER distribution tree, and are as follows:
   1.6 perry
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry base	The NetBSD/i386 _VER base binary distribution. You
1.1 cgd MUST install this distribution set. It contains the
1.1 cgd base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the
1.1 cgd system to run and be minimally functional. It
1.1 cgd includes shared library support, and excludes
   1.1 cgd everything described below.
  1.11 perry [ 9.7M gzipped, 25.0M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry comp	The NetBSD/i386 Compiler tools. All of the tools
1.1 cgd relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!).
1.1 cgd This set includes the system include files
1.1 cgd (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain,
1.1 cgd and the various system libraries (except the shared
1.1 cgd libraries, which are included as part of the base
1.1 cgd set). This set also includes the manual pages for all
1.1 cgd of the utilities it contains, as well as the system
1.1 cgd call and library manual pages.
  1.11 perry [ 7.1M gzipped, 24.1M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry etc	This distribution set contains the system
1.1 cgd configuration files that reside in /etc and in several
1.1 cgd other places. This set MUST be installed if you are
1.1 cgd installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be
1.1 cgd used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading,
1.1 cgd it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and
1.1 cgd CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.)
  1.11 perry [ 53K gzipped, 328K uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry games	This set includes the games and their manual pages.
  1.11 perry [ 3.0M gzipped, 7.3M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry kern	This set contains a NetBSD/i386 _VER GENERIC kernel,
1.6 perry named "/netbsd". You MUST install this distribution
   1.6 perry set.
  1.11 perry [ 1.1M gzipped, 2.2M uncompressed ]
   1.6 perry
1.11 perry man	This set includes all of the manual pages for the
1.1 cgd binaries and other software contained in the base set.
1.1 cgd Note that it does not include any of the manual pages
1.1 cgd that are included in the other sets.
  1.11 perry [ 2.5M gzipped, 10.6M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry misc	This set includes the system dictionaries (which are
1.1 cgd rather large), the typesettable document set, and
1.1 cgd man pages for other architectures which happen to be
1.1 cgd installed from the source tree by default.
  1.11 perry [ 2.2M gzipped, 8.3M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
1.11 perry text	This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools,
1.1 cgd including groff, all related programs, and their
   1.1 cgd manual pages.
  1.11 perry [ 1.0M gzipped, 3.7M uncompressed ]
   1.1 cgd
   1.6 perry
1.6 perry IMPORTANT: In previous versions of NetBSD, the kernel from the install
1.6 perry floppy was copied onto the hard drive in a special step. In the new
1.6 perry install system, the kernel on the floppy is unsuited to being copied
1.6 perry onto the hard drive. Instead, a new set, "kern", has been added which
1.6 perry contains a generic kernel to be unloaded onto the drive. It must be
1.6 perry extracted in order to have a minimally functioning system.
   1.5 perry
1.11 perry The i386 security distribution set is named "secr" and can be found in
1.11 perry the "i386/binary/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER
1.11 perry distribution tree. It contains security related binaries which depend
1.11 perry on cryptographic source code. You do not need this distribution set to
1.11 perry use encrypted passwords in your password file; the "base" distribution
1.11 perry includes a crypt library which can perform only the decryption
1.11 perry function. The security distribution includes a version of the
1.11 perry Kerberos IV network security system, and a Kerberized version of the
1.11 perry "telnet" program. The "secr" distribution set can be found only on
1.11 perry those sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and which can
1.11 perry legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, it may
1.11 perry not be legal to distribute this set to locations outside of the United
  1.11 perry States and Canada.)
  1.11 perry [ 798K gzipped, 2.4M uncompressed ]
  1.11 perry
1.13 fvdl Since NetBSD 1.3, binary sets for the X Window system are also
1.13 fvdl distributed with NetBSD. The binaries are based on X11R6.3,
1.13 fvdl and XFree86 3.3.1 in the case of NetBSD/i386. You can not yet
1.13 fvdl install them using the new automated install system. However,
1.13 fvdl they are gzipped tarfiles, just like the other sets, so you
1.13 fvdl can always simply extract them once you have your NetBSD
1.13 fvdl system installed and running. The sets are:
  1.13 fvdl
1.13 fvdl xbase	The basic files needed for a complete X
1.13 fvdl client environment. This does not include
  1.13 fvdl the X servers.
  1.13 fvdl [ 2.5M gzipped, 7.7M uncompressed ]
  1.13 fvdl
1.13 fvdl xcomp	The extra libraries and include files needed
1.13 fvdl to compile X source code.
  1.13 fvdl [ 1.7M gzipped, 7.3M uncompressed ]
  1.13 fvdl
1.13 fvdl xcontrib	Programs that were contributed to X.
  1.13 fvdl
  1.13 fvdl [ 183k gzipped, 600k uncompressed ]
  1.13 fvdl
1.13 fvdl xfont	Fonts needed by X.
  1.13 fvdl [ 5.8M gzipped, 7M uncompressed ]
  1.13 fvdl
1.13 fvdl xserver	All XFree86 X servers. Because all of them are
1.13 fvdl included, this set is large. However, you will
1.13 fvdl only need one of the servers provided in this
  1.13 fvdl set (typically XF86_SVGA).
  1.13 fvdl [ 12M gzipped, 29M unzipped ]
  1.13 fvdl
1.11 perry The i386 binary distribution sets are distributed as gzipped tar files
1.11 perry named with the extension ".tgz", e.g. "base.tgz". They are also
1.11 perry available in split form -- catted together, the members of a split set
1.1 cgd form a gzipped tar file. Each i386 binary distribution set also has
1.11 perry its own checksum files, just as the source distribution sets do.
   1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally
1.1 cgd well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that
1.1 cgd method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That
1.1 cgd is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e.
1.1 cgd replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xfp"
1.1 cgd from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those
1.11 perry programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced unless
1.11 perry you run "tar" with the "--unlink" option. If you follow the normal
1.11 perry installation or upgrade procedures, this will be taken care of for
  1.11 perry you.
