1.1 cgd The i386-specific portion of the NetBSD 1.0 release is found in the
1.1 cgd "i386" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid
  1.1 cgd out as follows:
  1.1 cgd
  1.1 cgd .../NetBSD-1.0/i386/
1.2 cgd INSTALL Installation notes; this file.

  1.1 cgd utils/ Miscellaneous i386
  1.1 cgd installation utilities; see
  1.1 cgd installation section, below.
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd There are four i386 floppy images to be found in the "i386/floppy"
1.1 cgd subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.0 distribution. Two of them are bootable
1.1 cgd kernel-copy floppies, one is an installation floppy, and one is an
1.1 cgd upgrade floppy. They are all described in more detail below. There
1.1 cgd are gzipped versions of each available, for easier downloading. (The
1.1 cgd gzipped versions have the ".gz" extension added to their names.)
  1.1 cgd
  1.1 cgd Bootable Kernel-copy floppies:
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd These disks contain file systems, are bootable, and have
1.1 cgd enough utilities on board to copy a new kernel to your hard
1.1 cgd disk once you have it partitioned for NetBSD. They make
1.1 cgd upgrading to a new kernel easy, because all you have to do is
1.1 cgd get a new kernel-copy floppy with a new kernel, boot from it,
1.1 cgd and confirm that you want to have the kernel copied to your
  1.1 cgd disk.
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd There are two different kernel copy floppy images,
1.1 cgd "kcaha-10.fs", and "kcbt-10.fs". They are identical except
1.1 cgd that the first has the driver for the Adaptec 1542 SCSI host
1.1 cgd adapter and does not contain the driver for the Buslogic 74x
1.1 cgd SCSI host adapters, and vice-versa for the second. (All other
1.1 cgd drivers are present on both disks.)
  1.1 cgd
  1.1 cgd Installation floppy:
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd This disk contains the software necessary to prepare your hard
1.1 cgd drive for NetBSD and install the NetBSD distribution. It is
1.1 cgd not bootable, and must be used in conjunction with one of the
1.1 cgd kernel-copy floppies. This floppy is named "inst-10.fs".
  1.1 cgd
  1.1 cgd Upgrade floppy:
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd This disk contains the software to be used in upgrading the
1.1 cgd system from a previous version of NetBSD. It is not bootable,
1.1 cgd and must be used in conjunction with one of the kernel-copy
1.1 cgd floppies. This floppy is named "upgr-10.fs"
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd The NetBSD/i386 binary distribution sets contain the binaries which
1.1 cgd comprise the NetBSD 1.0 release for the i386. There are seven binary
1.1 cgd distribution sets, and the "security" distribution set. The binary
1.1 cgd distribution sets can be found in subdirectories of the "i386/binary"
1.1 cgd subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.0 distribution tree, and are as follows:
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd base10	The NetBSD/i386 1.0 base binary distribution. You
1.1 cgd MUST install this distribution set. It contains the
1.1 cgd base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the
1.1 cgd system to run and be minimally functional. It
1.1 cgd includes shared library support, and excludes
  1.1 cgd everything described below.
  1.1 cgd [ 6.2M gzipped, 16.7M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd comp10	The NetBSD/i386 Compiler tools. All of the tools
1.1 cgd relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!).
1.1 cgd This set includes the system include files
1.1 cgd (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain,
1.1 cgd and the various system libraries (except the shared
1.1 cgd libraries, which are included as part of the base
1.1 cgd set). This set also includes the manual pages for all
1.1 cgd of the utilities it contains, as well as the system
1.1 cgd call and library manual pages.
  1.1 cgd [ 4.2M gzipped, 12.9M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd etc10	This distribution set contains the system
1.1 cgd configuration files that reside in /etc and in several
1.1 cgd other places. This set MUST be installed if you are
1.1 cgd installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be
1.1 cgd used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading,
1.1 cgd it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and
1.1 cgd CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.)
  1.1 cgd [ 50K gzipped, 263K uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd games10	This set includes the games and their manual pages.
  1.1 cgd [ 1.0M gzipped, 2.7M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd man10	This set includes all of the manual pages for the
1.1 cgd binaries and other software contained in the base set.
1.1 cgd Note that it does not include any of the manual pages
1.1 cgd that are included in the other sets.
  1.1 cgd [ 0.7M gzipped, 2.8M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd misc10	This set includes the system dictionaries (which are
1.1 cgd rather large), the typesettable document set, and
1.1 cgd man pages for other architectures which happen to be
1.1 cgd installed from the source tree by default.
  1.1 cgd [ 1.6M gzipped, 5.6M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd text10	This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools,
1.1 cgd including groff, all related programs, and their
  1.1 cgd manual pages.
  1.1 cgd [ 0.8M gzipped, 2.8M uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd The i386 security distribution set is named "secr10" and can be found
1.1 cgd in the "i386/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.0 distribution
1.1 cgd tree. It contains crypt.c (the source file for the DES encryption
1.1 cgd algorithm) and the binaries which depend on it. It can only be found
1.1 cgd on those sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and that
1.1 cgd can legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, this
1.1 cgd distribution set may not be exported to locations outside of the
  1.1 cgd United States and Canada.) [ 114K gzipped, 253K uncompressed ]
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd The i386 binary distribution sets are distributed in the same form as
1.1 cgd the source distribution sets; catted together, the members of a set
1.1 cgd form a gzipped tar file. Each i386 binary distribution set also has
1.1 cgd its own "CKSUMS" file, just as the source distribution sets do.
  1.1 cgd
1.1 cgd The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally
1.1 cgd well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that
1.1 cgd method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That
1.1 cgd is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e.
1.1 cgd replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xfp"
1.1 cgd from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those
1.1 cgd programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced. If you
1.1 cgd follow the normal installation or upgrade procedures, this will be
1.1 cgd taken care of for you.
