That subdirectory is laid 5out as follows: 6 7.../NetBSD-_VER/pmax/ 8 binary/ pmax binary distribution sets 9 and kernel images; 10 see below. 11 12 installation/ installation materials: 13 disk images of a complete root 14 filesystem, for both network and 15 diskful installation; see below. 16 17 misc/ miscellaneous binaries including 18 a copy of the sysinst instalation tool. 19 20The NetBSD/pmax binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 21comprise the NetBSD _VER release for the pmax. There are eight binary 22distribution sets, plus optional X11 sets. The binary distribution 23sets can be found in the "pmax/binary/sets" subdirectory of the NetBSD 24_VER distribution tree, and are as follows: 25 26 base The NetBSD/pmax _VER base binary distribution. You 27 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 28 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 29 system to run and be minimally functional. It 30 does NOT include shared library support, and excludes 31 everything described below. 32 [ 11.6M gzipped ] 33 34 comp The NetBSD/pmax Compiler tools. All of the tools 35 relating to C and C++. This set includes the system 36 include files (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler 37 tool chain, and the various system libraries (except 38 the shared libraries, which are included as part of the 39 base set). This set also includes the manual pages for 40 all of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 41 call and library manual pages. 42 [ 10.9M gzipped ] 43 44 etc This distribution set contains the system configuration 45 files that reside in /etc and in several other places. 46 This set MUST be installed if you are installing the 47 system from scratch, but should NOT be used if you are 48 upgrading. (If you are upgrading, it's recommended that 49 you get a copy of this set and CAREFULLY upgrade your 50 configuration files by hand.) 51 [ 53K gzipped ] 52 53 games This set includes the games and their manual pages. 54 [ 3.0M gzipped ] 55 56 kern This set is a placeholder for bootable kernels. 57 58 man This set includes all of the manual pages for the 59 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 60 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 61 that are included in the other sets. 62 [ 2.6M gzipped ] 63 64 misc This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 65 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 66 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 67 installed from the source tree by default. 68 [ 1.9M gzipped, 8.3M uncompressed ] 69 70 text This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 71 including groff, all related programs, and their 72 manual pages. 73 [ 1.1M gzipped, 3.7M uncompressed ] 74 75 76 77 78The pmax security distribution set is named "secr" and can be found in 79the "pmax/binary/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER 80distribution tree. It contains security related binaries which depend 81on cryptographic source code. You do not need this distribution set to 82use encrypted passwords in your password file; the "base" distribution 83includes a crypt library which can perform only the decryption 84function. The security distribution includes a version of the 85Kerberos IV network security system, and a Kerberized version of the 86"telnet" program. The "secr" distribution set can be found only on 87those sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and which can 88legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, it may 89not be legal to distribute this set to locations outside of the United 90States and Canada.) 91 92At the time of release, the pmax distribution set does not include a 93security distribution. A binary will be built shortly after the 94release by a US permanent resident. In the meantime, if you are in the 95US or Canada and want the security distribution you must get the 96security source distribution and recompile libcrypt.a and recompile 97the following programs: 98 99 ed, ftpd, makekey, rexecd, uucpd, init, lock, login, passwd, 100 skeyinit, su, tn3270, pppd 101 102 103 104 105Since NetBSD 1.3, binary sets for the X Window system are also 106distributed with each NetBSD release. The binaries are based on 107X11R6.3 and can be installed using the 'sysinst' utility. 108 109 110 xbase The basic files needed for a complete X 111 client environment. This does not include 112 the X servers. 113 [ 3.25M gzipped ] 114 115 xcomp The extra libraries and include files needed 116 to compile X source code. 117 [ 2.1M gzipped, 7.3M uncompressed ] 118 119 xcontrib Programs that were contributed to X. 120 [ 216 gzipped ] 121 122 xfont Fonts needed by X. 123 [ 5.8M gzipped, 7M uncompressed ] 124 125 xserver X servers built from X11R5, supporting the 4.3bsd-derived 126 Xserver/framebuffer protocol used in NetBSD/pmax. 127 See the /usr/X11R6/bin/README.pmax file in this set for 128 more information on conifguring the X11 R5 servers to 129 work with X11R6 clients and with compressed fonts. 130 131 [ 712k gzipped, 2.4 unzipped ] 132 133 134The pmax binary distribution sets are distributed as gzipped tar files. 135Each pmax binary distribution set also has its own "CKSUMS" file, just 136as the source distribution sets do. 137 138The initial installation of NetBSD _VER on a Decstation not already running 139NetBSD _VER is supported by the following files, which are included in 140the `./installation' subdirectory: 141 142 diskimage/diskimage.gz 143 A gzipped copy of a full root filesystem. 144 When unzipped, this is suitable for dd'ing 145 onto a raw disk partition. 146 147 148 netboot/diskimage.tar.gz 149 A gzipped copy of a tar file containing the same 150 files as diskimage.gz. When unzipped, this is 151 suitable for setting up an NFS server for diskless 152 boot or installing via netboot. 153 154Distribution kernel images (e.g., for installalling on Ultrix) are 155also available separately in the ./binary/kernel subdirectory: 156 157 netbsd.aout An a.out-format generic kernel, bootable on an 158 existing NetBSD system. 159 160 netbsd.ecoff An ECOFF-format kernel, suitable for diskless boot 161 via TFTP or for upgrading from Ultrix. 162 163 164 nfsnetbsd.ecoff An minimal ECOFF-format kernel, minimized to 165 boot on bugggy PROMs that cannot boot kernels 166 larger than ~1 Mbyte. 167 168 169The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally 170well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that 171method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That 172is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e. 173replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xvfp" 174from /. 175
