1The sparc-specific portion of the NetBSD _VER release is found in the 2"sparc" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid 3out as follows: 4 5.../NetBSD-_VER/sparc/ 6 binary/ sparc binary distribution sets; 7 see below. 8 9 security/ sparc security distribution; 10 see below; 11 12 install/ Base GENERIC kernels, tools, 13 and installation/upgrade scripts. 14 15The NetBSD/sparc binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 16comprise the NetBSD _VER release for the sparc. There are seven binary 17distribution sets, and the "security" distribution set. The binary 18distribution sets can be found in subdirectories of the "sparc/binary" 19subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER distribution tree, and are as follows: 20 21 base1X The NetBSD/sparc _VER base binary distribution. You 22 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 23 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 24 system to run and be minimally functional. It 25 includes shared library support, and excludes 26 everything described below. 27 [ 8.6M gzipped, 25.8M uncompressed ] 28 29 comp1X The NetBSD/sparc Compiler tools. All of the tools 30 relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!). 31 This set includes the system include files 32 (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain, 33 and the various system libraries (except the shared 34 libraries, which are included as part of the base 35 set). This set also includes the manual pages for all 36 of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 37 call and library manual pages. 38 [ 6.2M gzipped, 20.9M uncompressed ] 39 40 etc1X This distribution set contains the system 41 configuration files that reside in /etc and in several 42 other places. This set MUST be installed if you are 43 installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be 44 used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading, 45 it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and 46 CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.) 47 [ 72K gzipped, 368K uncompressed ] 48 49 games1X This set includes the games and their manual pages. 50 [ 2.9M gzipped, 7.4M uncompressed ] 51 52 man1X This set includes all of the manual pages for the 53 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 54 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 55 that are included in the other sets. 56 [ 0.9M gzipped, 3.6M uncompressed ] 57 58 misc1X This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 59 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 60 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 61 installed from the source tree by default. 62 [ 1.9M gzipped, 6.6M uncompressed ] 63 64 text1X This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 65 including groff, all related programs, and their 66 manual pages. 67 [ 0.8M gzipped, 3.1M uncompressed ] 68 69 xbin1X This set is the X11R6.1 binary and library set. It 70 includes all the programs, fonts and libraries used 71 in the X window system, and is mandatory to use X. 72 [ 11M gzipped, 20M uncompressed ] 73 74 xcon1X This set is the X11R6.1 contributed software collection, 75 made up from programs in the contrib distribution. 76 [ ? gzipped, ? uncompressed ] 77 78 xinc1X This set is the X11R6.1 include set. 79 [ 0.3M gzipped, 2.2M uncompressed ] 80 81 xman1X This set in the X11R6.1 manual set. 82 [ 0.5M gzipped, 2.9M uncompressed ] 83 84The sparc security distribution set is named "secr1X" and can be found 85in the "sparc/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER distribution 86tree. It contains crypt.c (the source file for the DES encryption 87algorithm) and the binaries which depend on it. It can only be found 88on those sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and that 89can legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, it 90may not be legal to distribute this set to locations outside of the 91United States and Canada.) [ 127K gzipped, 337K uncompressed ] 92 93The sparc binary distribution sets are distributed in the same form as 94the source distribution sets; catted together, the members of a set 95form a gzipped tar file. Each sparc binary distribution set also has 96its own "CKSUMS" file, just as the source distribution sets do. The 97binary sets are "rooted" at /, that is, if you want to extract the 98binaries "into" your system, i.e. replace the system binaries with 99them, you have to run the "tar xfp" from /. Also note that if you 100upgrade or install this way, those programs that you are using at the 101time will NOT be replaced. If you follow the normal installation or 102upgrade procedures, this will be taken care of for you. 103 104The "sparc/install" directory contains an install script, an upgrade 105script, a "miniroot" filesystem, and two GENERIC kernels. As well, 106the distribution cannot be extracted using the SunOS "tar" program so 107SunOS statically-linked versions of gzip (GNU gzip) and gtar (GNU tar) 108are provided. 109
