That subdirectory is laid 5out as follows: 6 7.../NetBSD-_VER/sun3/ 8 INSTALL Installation notes; this file. 9 10 installation/ 11 miniroot/ sun3 miniroot image 12 netboot/ sun3 network boot support 13 tapeimage/ sun3 boot tape support 14 15 binary/ 16 kernel/ sun3 kernels 17 sets/ sun3 binary distribution sets 18 security/ sun3 security distribution 19 20Detailed content descriptions by directory: 21 22.../sun3/installation/ 23 24Files and scripts used during installation. This distribution 25supports installation of NetBSD/sun3 onto a sun3 with no previous 26operating system, with initial boot from network or tape. See 27"Getting the NetBSD System onto Useful Media" for instructions 28on either method. 29 30.../sun3/installation/miniroot/ 31 32 miniroot.gz A gzipped copy of the miniroot filesystem. 33 This image is to be un-gzipped and copied 34 into the swap area of a disk. 35 36.../sun3/installation/netboot/ 37 38 netboot A copy of the network boot program. 39 This is useful if you are installing 40 a diskless NetBSD/sun3 system. 41 42.../sun3/installation/tapeboot/ 43 44 MakeBootTape A script for creating the boot tape. 45 46 MakeInstTape A script for creating the install tape. 47 48 tapeboot A copy of the tape boot program, used 49 as the first segment of a boot tape. 50 51.../sun3/binary/kernel/ 52 53 netbsd-gen.gz A gzipped GENERIC kernel (for upgrade) 54 55 netbsd-inst.gz A gzipped INSTALL kernel. This has a 56 small enough configuration so it will 57 boot on any Sun-3 (even a 3/50). 58 59 netbsd-rd.gz A gzipped copy of the "RAMDISK kernel" 60 for installing the miniroot filesystem. 61 62.../sun3/binary/sets/ 63 64The NetBSD/sun3 binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 65comprise the NetBSD _VER release for the sun3. There are seven binary 66distribution sets and the "security" distribution set. The binary 67distribution sets can be found in the "sun3/binary/sets" subdirectory 68of the NetBSD _VER distribution tree, and are as follows: 69 70 base The NetBSD/sun3 _VER base binary distribution. You 71 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 72 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 73 system to run and be minimally functional. It 74 includes shared library support, and excludes 75 everything described below. 76 [ 9M gzipped, 26M uncompressed ] 77 78 comp The NetBSD/sun3 Compiler tools. All of the tools 79 relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!). 80 This set includes the system include files 81 (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain, 82 and the various system libraries (except the shared 83 libraries, which are included as part of the base 84 set). This set also includes the manual pages for all 85 of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 86 call and library manual pages. 87 [ 7M gzipped, 24M uncompressed ] 88 89 etc This distribution set contains the system configuration 90 files that reside in /etc and in several other places. 91 This set MUST be installed if you are installing the 92 system from scratch, but should NOT be used if you are 93 upgrading. (If you are upgrading, it's recommended that 94 you get a copy of this set and CAREFULLY upgrade your 95 configuration files by hand.) 96 [ 54K gzipped, 330K uncompressed ] 97 98 games This set includes the games and their manual pages. 99 [ 3M gzipped, 7M uncompressed ] 100 101 man This set includes all of the manual pages for the 102 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 103 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 104 that are included in the other sets. 105 [ 3M gzipped, 10M uncompressed ] 106 107 misc This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 108 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 109 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 110 installed from the source tree by default. 111 [ 2M gzipped, 8M uncompressed ] 112 113 text This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 114 including groff, all related programs, and their 115 manual pages. 116 [ 1M gzipped, 4M uncompressed ] 117 118.../sun3/binary/security/ 119 120Contains executables which are built from the "src/domestic" 121portion if the NetBSD source tree. It can only be found on those 122sites which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and that can 123legally obtain it. (Remember, because of United States law, it 124may not be legal to distribute this set to locations outside of 125the United States and Canada.) 126 [ 128K gzipped, 275K uncompressed ] 127 128The sun3 binary distribution sets are distributed as gzipped tar files 129named with the extension ".tgz", e.g. "base.tgz". Each sun3 binary 130distribution set also has its own checksum files, just as the source 131distribution sets do. 132 133The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally 134well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that 135method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That 136is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e. 137replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the commands: 138 139 cd / 140 pax -zrvpe -f set.tar.gz 141
