1.1 oki The x68k-specific portion of the NetBSD 1.2 release is found in the
1.1 oki "x68k" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid
1.1 oki out as follows:
1.1 oki
1.1 oki .../NetBSD-1.2/x68k/
1.1 oki binary/ x68k binary distribution sets;
1.1 oki see below.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki floppies/ x68k boot and installation
1.1 oki floppies; see below.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki utils/ installation utilities which
1.1 oki runs on Human68k.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki There are three floppy images in the "x68k/floppies" subdirectory of
1.1 oki the NetBSD 1.2 distribution. One is bootable kernel-copy floppy, one
1.1 oki is "inst12.fs", which is used to install NetBSD/x68k for the first
1.1 oki time, and one is "upgr12.fs", which is used in upgrading the system
1.1 oki from the previous version of NetBSD/x68k.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki Bootable Kernel-copy floppy:
1.1 oki
1.1 oki These disks contain file systems, are bootable, and have
1.1 oki enough utilities on board to copy a new kernel to your hard
1.1 oki disk once you have it partitioned for NetBSD. They make
1.1 oki upgrading to a new kernel easy, because all you have to do is
1.1 oki get a new kernel-copy floppy with a new kernel, boot from it,
1.1 oki and confirm that you want to have the kernel copied to your
1.1 oki disk.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki Installation floppy:
1.1 oki
1.1 oki This disk contains the software necessary to prepare your hard
1.1 oki drive for NetBSD and install the NetBSD distribution. It is
1.2 oki not bootable, and must be used in conjunction with the kernel-
1.2 oki copy floppy. This floppy is named "inst12.fs".
1.1 oki
1.1 oki Upgrade floppy:
1.1 oki
1.1 oki This disk contains the software to be used in upgrading the
1.1 oki system from a previous version of NetBSD. It is not bootable,
1.2 oki and must be used in conjunction with the kernel-copy floppy.
1.2 oki This floppy is named "upgr12.fs".
1.1 oki
1.1 oki The NetBSD/x68k binary distribution sets contain the binaries which
1.1 oki comprise the NetBSD 1.2 release for the x68k. There are seven binary
1.1 oki distribution sets. The binary distribution sets can be found in
1.1 oki subdirectories of the "x68k/binary" subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.2
1.1 oki distribution tree, and are as follows:
1.1 oki
1.1 oki base12 The NetBSD/x68k 1.2 base binary distribution. You
1.1 oki MUST install this distribution set. It contains the
1.1 oki base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the
1.1 oki system to run and be minimally functional. It
1.1 oki includes shared library support, and excludes
1.1 oki everything described below.
1.1 oki [ 7.5M gzipped, 22.8M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki comp12 The NetBSD/x68k Compiler tools. All of the tools
1.1 oki relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!).
1.1 oki This set includes the system include files
1.1 oki (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain,
1.1 oki and the various system libraries (except the shared
1.1 oki libraries, which are included as part of the base
1.1 oki set). This set also includes the manual pages for all
1.1 oki of the utilities it contains, as well as the system
1.1 oki call and library manual pages.
1.1 oki [ 5.3M gzipped, 17.5M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki etc12 This distribution set contains the system
1.1 oki configuration files that reside in /etc and in several
1.1 oki other places. This set MUST be installed if you are
1.1 oki installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be
1.1 oki used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading,
1.1 oki it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and
1.1 oki CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.)
1.1 oki [ 68K gzipped, 358K uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki games12 This set includes the games and their manual pages.
1.1 oki [ 2.8M gzipped, 7.0M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki man12 This set includes all of the manual pages for the
1.1 oki binaries and other software contained in the base set.
1.1 oki Note that it does not include any of the manual pages
1.1 oki that are included in the other sets.
1.1 oki [ 0.9M gzipped, 3.5M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki misc12 This set includes the system dictionaries (which are
1.1 oki rather large), the typesettable document set, and
1.1 oki man pages for other architectures which happen to be
1.1 oki installed from the source tree by default.
1.1 oki [ 1.9M gzipped, 6.6M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki text12 This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools,
1.1 oki including groff, all related programs, and their
1.1 oki manual pages.
1.1 oki [ 0.8M gzipped, 2.9M uncompressed ]
1.1 oki
1.1 oki For other platform, there is a security distribution named "secr12"
1.3 mycroft provided. The x68k security distribution is not provided in the
1.1 oki binary form.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki The x68k binary distribution sets are distributed in the same form as
1.1 oki the source distribution sets; catted together, the members of a set
1.1 oki form a gzipped tar file. Each x68k binary distribution set also has
1.1 oki its own "CKSUMS" file, just as the source distribution sets do.
1.1 oki
1.1 oki The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally
1.1 oki well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that
1.1 oki method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That
1.1 oki is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e.
1.1 oki replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xvfp"
1.1 oki from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those
1.1 oki programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced. If you
1.1 oki follow the normal installation or upgrade procedures, this will be
1.1 oki taken care of for you.
