1The x68k-specific portion of the NetBSD 1.2 release is found in the 2"x68k" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid 3out as follows: 4 5.../NetBSD-1.2/x68k/ 6 binary/ x68k binary distribution sets; 7 see below. 8 9 floppies/ x68k boot and installation 10 floppies; see below. 11 12 utils/ installation utilities which 13 runs on Human68k. 14 15There are three floppy images in the "x68k/floppies" subdirectory of 16the NetBSD 1.2 distribution. One is bootable kernel-copy floppy, one 17is "inst12.fs", which is used to install NetBSD/x68k for the first 18time, and one is "upgr12.fs", which is used in upgrading the system 19from the previous version of NetBSD/x68k. 20 21Bootable Kernel-copy floppy: 22 23 These disks contain file systems, are bootable, and have 24 enough utilities on board to copy a new kernel to your hard 25 disk once you have it partitioned for NetBSD. They make 26 upgrading to a new kernel easy, because all you have to do is 27 get a new kernel-copy floppy with a new kernel, boot from it, 28 and confirm that you want to have the kernel copied to your 29 disk. 30 31Installation floppy: 32 33 This disk contains the software necessary to prepare your hard 34 drive for NetBSD and install the NetBSD distribution. It is 35 not bootable, and must be used in conjunction with one of the 36 kernel-copy floppies. This floppy is named "inst12.fs". 37 38Upgrade floppy: 39 40 This disk contains the software to be used in upgrading the 41 system from a previous version of NetBSD. It is not bootable, 42 and must be used in conjunction with one of the kernel-copy 43 floppies. This floppy is named "upgr12.fs". 44 45The NetBSD/x68k binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 46comprise the NetBSD 1.2 release for the x68k. There are seven binary 47distribution sets. The binary distribution sets can be found in 48subdirectories of the "x68k/binary" subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.2 49distribution tree, and are as follows: 50 51 base12 The NetBSD/x68k 1.2 base binary distribution. You 52 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 53 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 54 system to run and be minimally functional. It 55 includes shared library support, and excludes 56 everything described below. 57 [ 7.5M gzipped, 22.8M uncompressed ] 58 59 comp12 The NetBSD/x68k Compiler tools. All of the tools 60 relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!). 61 This set includes the system include files 62 (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain, 63 and the various system libraries (except the shared 64 libraries, which are included as part of the base 65 set). This set also includes the manual pages for all 66 of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 67 call and library manual pages. 68 [ 5.3M gzipped, 17.5M uncompressed ] 69 70 etc12 This distribution set contains the system 71 configuration files that reside in /etc and in several 72 other places. This set MUST be installed if you are 73 installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be 74 used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading, 75 it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and 76 CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.) 77 [ 68K gzipped, 358K uncompressed ] 78 79 games12 This set includes the games and their manual pages. 80 [ 2.8M gzipped, 7.0M uncompressed ] 81 82 man12 This set includes all of the manual pages for the 83 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 84 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 85 that are included in the other sets. 86 [ 0.9M gzipped, 3.5M uncompressed ] 87 88 misc12 This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 89 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 90 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 91 installed from the source tree by default. 92 [ 1.9M gzipped, 6.6M uncompressed ] 93 94 text12 This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 95 including groff, all related programs, and their 96 manual pages. 97 [ 0.8M gzipped, 2.9M uncompressed ] 98 99For other platform, there is a security distribution named "secr12" 100is provided. It contains the files which cannot be exported outside 101the United States and Canada. Since all the developers of the NetBSD/x68k 102live in Japan, the x68k security distribution is not provided in the 103binary form. 104 105The x68k binary distribution sets are distributed in the same form as 106the source distribution sets; catted together, the members of a set 107form a gzipped tar file. Each x68k binary distribution set also has 108its own "CKSUMS" file, just as the source distribution sets do. 109 110The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally 111well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that 112method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That 113is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e. 114replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xvfp" 115from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those 116programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced. If you 117follow the normal installation or upgrade procedures, this will be 118taken care of for you. 119
