That subdirectory is laid 5 out as follows: 6 7 .../NetBSD-1.2/x68k/ 8 binary/ x68k binary distribution sets; 9 see below. 10 11 floppies/ x68k boot and installation 12 floppies; see below. 13 14 utils/ installation utilities which 15 runs on Human68k. 16 17 There are three floppy images in the "x68k/floppies" subdirectory of 18 the NetBSD 1.2 distribution. One is bootable kernel-copy floppy, one 19 is "inst12.fs", which is used to install NetBSD/x68k for the first 20 time, and one is "upgr12.fs", which is used in upgrading the system 21 from the previous version of NetBSD/x68k. 22 23 Bootable Kernel-copy floppy: 24 25 These disks contain file systems, are bootable, and have 26 enough utilities on board to copy a new kernel to your hard 27 disk once you have it partitioned for NetBSD. They make 28 upgrading to a new kernel easy, because all you have to do is 29 get a new kernel-copy floppy with a new kernel, boot from it, 30 and confirm that you want to have the kernel copied to your 31 disk. 32 33 Installation floppy: 34 35 This disk contains the software necessary to prepare your hard 36 drive for NetBSD and install the NetBSD distribution. It is 37 not bootable, and must be used in conjunction with the kernel- 38 copy floppy. This floppy is named "inst12.fs". 39 40 Upgrade floppy: 41 42 This disk contains the software to be used in upgrading the 43 system from a previous version of NetBSD. It is not bootable, 44 and must be used in conjunction with the kernel-copy floppy. 45 This floppy is named "upgr12.fs". 46 47 The NetBSD/x68k binary distribution sets contain the binaries which 48 comprise the NetBSD 1.2 release for the x68k. There are seven binary 49 distribution sets. The binary distribution sets can be found in 50 subdirectories of the "x68k/binary" subdirectory of the NetBSD 1.2 51 distribution tree, and are as follows: 52 53 base12 The NetBSD/x68k 1.2 base binary distribution. You 54 MUST install this distribution set. It contains the 55 base NetBSD utilities that are necessary for the 56 system to run and be minimally functional. It 57 includes shared library support, and excludes 58 everything described below. 59 [ 7.5M gzipped, 22.8M uncompressed ] 60 61 comp12 The NetBSD/x68k Compiler tools. All of the tools 62 relating to C, C++, and FORTRAN (yes, there are two!). 63 This set includes the system include files 64 (/usr/include), the linker, the compiler tool chain, 65 and the various system libraries (except the shared 66 libraries, which are included as part of the base 67 set). This set also includes the manual pages for all 68 of the utilities it contains, as well as the system 69 call and library manual pages. 70 [ 5.3M gzipped, 17.5M uncompressed ] 71 72 etc12 This distribution set contains the system 73 configuration files that reside in /etc and in several 74 other places. This set MUST be installed if you are 75 installing the system from scratch, but should NOT be 76 used if you are upgrading. (If you are upgrading, 77 it's recommended that you get a copy of this set and 78 CAREFULLY upgrade your configuration files by hand.) 79 [ 68K gzipped, 358K uncompressed ] 80 81 games12 This set includes the games and their manual pages. 82 [ 2.8M gzipped, 7.0M uncompressed ] 83 84 man12 This set includes all of the manual pages for the 85 binaries and other software contained in the base set. 86 Note that it does not include any of the manual pages 87 that are included in the other sets. 88 [ 0.9M gzipped, 3.5M uncompressed ] 89 90 misc12 This set includes the system dictionaries (which are 91 rather large), the typesettable document set, and 92 man pages for other architectures which happen to be 93 installed from the source tree by default. 94 [ 1.9M gzipped, 6.6M uncompressed ] 95 96 text12 This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 97 including groff, all related programs, and their 98 manual pages. 99 [ 0.8M gzipped, 2.9M uncompressed ] 100 101 For other platform, there is a security distribution named "secr12" 102 provided. The x68k security distribution is not provided in the 103 binary form. 104 105 The x68k binary distribution sets are distributed in the same form as 106 the source distribution sets; catted together, the members of a set 107 form a gzipped tar file. Each x68k binary distribution set also has 108 its own "CKSUMS" file, just as the source distribution sets do. 109 110 The instructions given for extracting the source sets work equally 111 well for the binary sets, but it is worth noting that if you use that 112 method, the files are extracted "below" the current directory. That 113 is, if you want to extract the binaries "into" your system, i.e. 114 replace the system binaries with them, you have to run the "tar xvfp" 115 from /. Also note that if you upgrade or install this way, those 116 programs that you are using at the time will NOT be replaced. If you 117 follow the normal installation or upgrade procedures, this will be 118 taken care of for you. 119
