1.1 mrg The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like
1.1 mrg operating system which is free software: the GNU system. (GNU is a
1.1 mrg recursive acronym for ``GNU's Not Unix''; it is pronounced
1.1 mrg ``guh-NEW''@.) Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the
1.1 mrg kernel Linux, are now widely used; though these systems are often
1.1 mrg referred to as ``Linux'', they are more accurately called GNU/Linux
  1.1 mrg systems.
