      1.1 tron <b>DESCRIPTION</b>
1.1 tron The Postfix <a href="sendmail.1.html"><b>sendmail</b>(1)</a> command implements the Postfix to
1.1 tron Sendmail compatibility interface. For the sake of compat-
1.1 tron ibility with existing applications, some Sendmail command-
1.1 tron line options are recognized but silently ignored.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron By default, Postfix <a href="sendmail.1.html"><b>sendmail</b>(1)</a> reads a message from stan-
1.1 tron dard input until EOF or until it reads a line with only a
1.1 tron <b>.</b> character, and arranges for delivery. Postfix <a href="sendmail.1.html"><b>send-</b></a>
      1.1 tron <a href="sendmail.1.html"><b>mail</b>(1)</a> relies on the <a href="postdrop.1.html"><b>postdrop</b>(1)</a> command to create a
1.1 tron queue file in the <b>maildrop</b> directory.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron Specific command aliases are provided for other common
      1.1 tron modes of operation:
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>mailq</b> List the mail queue. Each entry shows the queue
1.1 tron file ID, message size, arrival time, sender, and
1.1 tron the recipients that still need to be delivered. If
1.1 tron mail could not be delivered upon the last attempt,
1.1 tron the reason for failure is shown. The queue ID
1.1 tron string is followed by an optional status character:
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>*</b> The message is in the <b>active</b> queue, i.e. the
1.1 tron message is selected for delivery.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>!</b> The message is in the <b>hold</b> queue, i.e. no
1.1 tron further delivery attempt will be made until
1.1 tron the mail is taken off hold.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron This mode of operation is implemented by executing
      1.1 tron the <a href="postqueue.1.html"><b>postqueue</b>(1)</a> command.
      1.1 tron
      1.1 tron <b>newaliases</b>
1.1 tron Initialize the alias database. If no input file is
1.1 tron specified (with the <b>-oA</b> option, see below), the
1.1 tron program processes the file(s) specified with the
1.1 tron <b><a href="postconf.5.html#alias_database">alias_database</a></b> configuration parameter. If no
1.1 tron alias database type is specified, the program uses
1.1 tron the type specified with the <b><a href="postconf.5.html#default_database_type">default_database_type</a></b>
1.1 tron configuration parameter. This mode of operation is
1.1 tron implemented by running the <a href="postalias.1.html"><b>postalias</b>(1)</a> command.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron Note: it may take a minute or so before an alias
1.1 tron database update becomes visible. Use the "<b>postfix</b>
1.1 tron <b>reload</b>" command to eliminate this delay.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron These and other features can be selected by specifying the
1.1 tron appropriate combination of command-line options. Some fea-
1.1 tron tures are controlled by parameters in the <a href="postconf.5.html"><b>main.cf</b></a> configu-
      1.1 tron ration file.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron The following options are recognized:
      1.1 tron

      1.1 tron
      1.1 tron <b>-Ac</b> (ignored)
1.1 tron Postfix sendmail uses the same configuration file
1.1 tron regardless of whether or not a message is an ini-
      1.1 tron tial submission.
      1.1 tron
      1.1 tron <b>-B</b> <i>body</i><b>_</b><i>type</i>
1.1 tron The message body MIME type: <b>7BIT</b> or <b>8BITMIME</b>.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>-bd</b> Go into daemon mode. This mode of operation is
1.1 tron implemented by executing the "<b>postfix start</b>" com-
      1.1 tron mand.
      1.1 tron
      1.1 tron <b>-bh</b> (ignored)
      1.1 tron
      1.1 tron <b>-bH</b> (ignored)
1.1 tron Postfix has no persistent host status database.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>-bi</b> Initialize alias database. See the <b>newaliases</b> com-
      1.1 tron mand above.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron <b>-bl</b> Go into daemon mode. To accept only local connec-
1.1.1.3 tron tions as with Sendmail's <b>-bl</b> option, specify
  1.1.1.3 tron "<b><a href="postconf.5.html#inet_interfaces">inet_interfaces</a> = loopback</b>" in the Postfix <a href="postconf.5.html"><b>main.cf</b></a>

  1.1.1.3 tron
1.1.1.3 tron <b>-bm</b> Read mail from standard input and arrange for
1.1 tron delivery. This is the default mode of operation.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron <b>-bp</b> List the mail queue. See the <b>mailq</b> command above.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron <b>-bs</b> Stand-alone SMTP server mode. Read SMTP commands
1.1.1.3 tron from standard input, and write responses to stan-
1.1 tron dard output. In stand-alone SMTP server mode, mail
1.1.1.3 tron relaying and other access controls are disabled by
1.1.1.3 tron default. To enable them, run the process as the
      1.1 tron <b><a href="postconf.5.html#mail_owner">mail_owner</a></b> user.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron This mode of operation is implemented by running
      1.1 tron the <a href="smtpd.8.html"><b>smtpd</b>(8)</a> daemon.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron <b>-bv</b> Do not collect or deliver a message. Instead, send
1.1.1.3 tron an email report after verifying each recipient
1.1.1.3 tron address. This is useful for testing address
1.1 tron rewriting and routing configurations.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron This feature is available in Postfix version 2.1
      1.1 tron and later.

1.1.1.3 tron its parent directory. This information is ignored
1.1 tron with Postfix versions before 2.3.
      1.1 tron
1.1 tron With all Postfix versions, you can specify a direc-
1.1 tron tory pathname with the MAIL_CONFIG environment
1.1.1.3 tron variable to override the location of configuration

1.1.1.3 tron Set the sender full name. This overrides the NAME
1.1.1.3 tron environment variable, and is used only with mes-
1.1 tron sages that have no <b>From:</b> message header.

1.1.1.3 tron address where delivery problems are sent to. With
1.1 tron Postfix versions before 2.1, the <b>Errors-To:</b> message
1.1 tron header overrides the error return address.
      1.1 tron
1.1.1.3 tron <b>-G</b> Gateway (relay) submission, as opposed to initial
1.1.1.3 tron user submission. Either do not rewrite addresses
