There are <a href= 865 1.1.1.9 jdc "#creation">three functions in the Expat API for creating a parser object. 866 1.1.1.9 jdc However, only two of these (
<a href= 867 1.1.1.9 jdc "#XML_ParserCreate">XML_ParserCreate
and
<a href= 868 1.1.1.9 jdc "#XML_ParserCreateNS">XML_ParserCreateNS
) can be used for constructing 869 1.1.1.9 jdc a parser for a top-level document. The object returned by these functions is an 870 1.1.1.9 jdc opaque pointer (i.e. "expat.h" declares it as void *) to data with further 871 1.1.1.9 jdc internal structure. In order to free the memory associated with this object you 872 1.1.1.9 jdc must call
XML_ParserFree
. Note that if 873 1.1.1.9 jdc you have provided any user data that gets stored in the 874 1.1.1.9 jdc parser, then your application is responsible for freeing it prior to calling 875 1.1.1.9 jdc
XML_ParserFree
. 876 1.1.1.9 jdc
877 1.1.1.9 jdc 878 1.1.1.9 jdc
879 1.1.1.9 jdc The objects returned by the parser creation functions are good for parsing only 880 1.1.1.9 jdc one XML document or external parsed entity. If your application needs to parse 881 1.1.1.9 jdc many XML documents, then it needs to create a parser object for each one. The 882 1.1.1.9 jdc best way to deal with this is to create a higher level object that contains all 883 1.1.1.9 jdc the default initialization you want for your parser objects. 884 1.1.1.9 jdc
885 1.1.1.9 jdc 886 1.1.1.9 jdc
887 1.1.1.9 jdc Walking through a document hierarchy with a stream oriented parser will require a 888 1.1.1.9 jdc good stack mechanism in order to keep track of current context. For instance, to 889 1.1.1.9 jdc answer the simple question, "What element does this text belong to?" requires a 890 1.1.1.9 jdc stack, since the parser may have descended into other elements that are children 891 1.1.1.9 jdc of the current one and has encountered this text on the way out. 892 1.1.1.9 jdc
893 1.1.1.9 jdc 894 1.1.1.9 jdc
895 1.1.1.9 jdc The things you're likely to want to keep on a stack are the currently opened 896 1.1.1.9 jdc element and it's attributes. You push this information onto the stack in the 897 1.1.1.9 jdc start handler and you pop it off in the end handler. 898 1.1.1.9 jdc
899 1.1.1.9 jdc 900 1.1.1.9 jdc
901 1.1.1.9 jdc For some tasks, it is sufficient to just keep information on what the depth of 902 1.1.1.9 jdc the stack is (or would be if you had one.) The outline program shown above 903 1.1.1.9 jdc presents one example. Another such task would be skipping over a complete 904 1.1.1.9 jdc element. When you see the start tag for the element you want to skip, you set a 905 1.1.1.9 jdc skip flag and record the depth at which the element started. When the end tag 906 1.1.1.9 jdc handler encounters the same depth, the skipped element has ended and the flag may 907 1.1.1.9 jdc be cleared. If you follow the convention that the root element starts at 1, then 908 1.1.1.9 jdc you can use the same variable for skip flag and skip depth. 909 1.1.1.9 jdc
910 1.1 tron 911 1.1.1.9 jdc
912 1.1 tron void 913 1.1 tron init_info(Parseinfo *info) { 914 1.1.1.9 jdc info->skip = 0; 915 1.1.1.9 jdc info->depth = 1; 916 1.1 tron /* Other initializations here */ 917 1.1 tron } /* End of init_info */ 918 1.1 tron 919 1.1 tron void XMLCALL 920 1.1 tron rawstart(void *data, const char *el, const char **attr) { 921 1.1 tron Parseinfo *inf = (Parseinfo *) data; 922 1.1 tron 923 1.1.1.9 jdc if (! inf->skip) { 924 1.1 tron if (should_skip(inf, el, attr)) { 925 1.1.1.9 jdc inf->skip = inf->depth; 926 1.1 tron } 927 1.1 tron else 928 1.1 tron start(inf, el, attr); /* This does rest of start handling */ 929 1.1 tron } 930 1.1 tron 931 1.1.1.9 jdc inf->depth++; 932 1.1 tron } /* End of rawstart */ 933 1.1 tron 934 1.1 tron void XMLCALL 935 1.1 tron rawend(void *data, const char *el) { 936 1.1 tron Parseinfo *inf = (Parseinfo *) data; 937 1.1 tron 938 1.1.1.9 jdc inf->depth--; 939 1.1 tron 940 1.1.1.9 jdc if (! inf->skip) 941 1.1 tron end(inf, el); /* This does rest of end handling */ 942 1.1 tron 943 1.1.1.9 jdc if (inf->skip == inf->depth) 944 1.1.1.9 jdc inf->skip = 0; 945 1.1 tron } /* End rawend */ 946 1.1 tron
947 1.1.1.9 jdc
948 1.1.1.9 jdc Notice in the above example the difference in how depth is manipulated in the 949 1.1.1.9 jdc start and end handlers.
