1.14 christos The Time Zone Database (called tz, tzdb or zoneinfo) contains code and
1.8 christos data that represent the history of local time for many representative
1.8 christos locations around the globe. It is updated periodically to reflect
1.8 christos changes made by political bodies to time zone boundaries, UTC offsets,
1.8 christos and daylight-saving rules.

1.12 christos See <https://www.iana.org/time-zones/repository/tz-link.html> or the
1.13 christos file tz-link.html for how to acquire the code and data. Once acquired,
1.12 christos read the comments in the file 'Makefile' and make any changes needed
1.5 kleink to make things right for your system, especially if you are using some
1.5 kleink platform other than GNU/Linux. Then run the following commands,
1.5 kleink substituting your desired installation directory for "$HOME/tzdir":
1.5 kleink
1.5 kleink make TOPDIR=$HOME/tzdir install
1.13 christos $HOME/tzdir/usr/bin/zdump -v America/Los_Angeles

1.14 christos This database of historical local time information has several goals:
1.6 mlelstv
1.14 christos * Provide a compendium of data about the history of civil time that
1.14 christos is useful even if not 100% accurate.
1.4 jtc
1.14 christos * Give an idea of the variety of local time rules that have existed
1.14 christos in the past and thus may be expected in the future.
1.4 jtc
1.14 christos * Test the generality of the local time rule description system.

1.4 jtc The information in the time zone data files is by no means authoritative;
1.9 christos fixes and enhancements are welcome. Please see the file CONTRIBUTING
1.9 christos for details.
