      1.1 cgd /*
1.1 cgd *	A search path consists of a Lst of Path structures. A Path structure
1.1 cgd *	has in it the name of the directory and a hash table of all the files
1.1 cgd *	in the directory. This is used to cut down on the number of system
1.1 cgd *	calls necessary to find implicit dependents and their like. Since
1.1 cgd *	these searches are made before any actions are taken, we need not
1.1 cgd *	worry about the directory changing due to creation commands. If this
1.1 cgd *	hampers the style of some makefiles, they must be changed.
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd *	A list of all previously-read directories is kept in the
1.1 cgd *	openDirectories Lst. This list is checked first before a directory
      1.1 cgd *	is opened.
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd *	The need for the caching of whole directories is brought about by
1.1 cgd *	the multi-level transformation code in suff.c, which tends to search
1.1 cgd *	for far more files than regular make does. In the initial
1.1 cgd *	implementation, the amount of time spent performing "stat" calls was
1.1 cgd *	truly astronomical. The problem with hashing at the start is,
1.1 cgd *	of course, that pmake doesn't then detect changes to these directories
1.1 cgd *	during the course of the make. Three possibilities suggest themselves:
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd * 1) just use stat to test for a file's existence. As mentioned
1.1 cgd * above, this is very inefficient due to the number of checks
1.1 cgd * engendered by the multi-level transformation code.
1.1 cgd * 2) use readdir() and company to search the directories, keeping
1.1 cgd * them open between checks. I have tried this and while it
1.1 cgd * didn't slow down the process too much, it could severely
1.1 cgd * affect the amount of parallelism available as each directory
1.1 cgd * open would take another file descriptor out of play for
1.1 cgd * handling I/O for another job. Given that it is only recently
1.1 cgd * that UNIX OS's have taken to allowing more than 20 or 32
1.1 cgd * file descriptors for a process, this doesn't seem acceptable
      1.1 cgd * to me.
1.1 cgd * 3) record the mtime of the directory in the Path structure and
1.1 cgd * verify the directory hasn't changed since the contents were
1.1 cgd * hashed. This will catch the creation or deletion of files,
1.1 cgd * but not the updating of files. However, since it is the
1.1 cgd * creation and deletion that is the problem, this could be
1.1 cgd * a good thing to do. Unfortunately, if the directory (say ".")
1.1 cgd * were fairly large and changed fairly frequently, the constant
1.1 cgd * rehashing could seriously degrade performance. It might be
1.1 cgd * good in such cases to keep track of the number of rehashes
1.1 cgd * and if the number goes over a (small) limit, resort to using
1.1 cgd * stat in its place.
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd *	An additional thing to consider is that pmake is used primarily
1.1 cgd *	to create C programs and until recently pcc-based compilers refused
1.1 cgd *	to allow you to specify where the resulting object file should be
1.1 cgd *	placed. This forced all objects to be created in the current
1.1 cgd *	directory. This isn't meant as a full excuse, just an explanation of
1.1 cgd *	some of the reasons for the caching used here.
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd *	One more note: the location of a target's file is only performed
1.1 cgd *	on the downward traversal of the graph and then only for terminal
1.1 cgd *	nodes in the graph. This could be construed as wrong in some cases,
1.1 cgd *	but prevents inadvertent modification of files when the "installed"
1.1 cgd *	directory for a file is provided in the search path.
      1.1 cgd *
1.1 cgd *	Another data structure maintained by this module is an mtime
1.1 cgd *	cache used when the searching of cached directories fails to find
1.1 cgd *	a file. In the past, Dir_FindFile would simply perform an access()
1.1 cgd *	call in such a case to determine if the file could be found using
1.1 cgd *	just the name given. When this hit, however, all that was gained
1.1 cgd *	was the knowledge that the file existed. Given that an access() is
1.1 cgd *	essentially a stat() without the copyout() call, and that the same
1.1 cgd *	filesystem overhead would have to be incurred in Dir_MTime, it made
1.1 cgd *	sense to replace the access() with a stat() and record the mtime
1.1 cgd *	in a cache for when Dir_MTime was actually called.
