40b96bd083Smrg set_gamma_info: remove unnecessary round-trip to server
41b96bd083Smrg
42b96bd083Smrg XRRGetCrtcGamma() returns the exact same size information as
43b96bd083Smrg XRRGetCrtcGammaSize(), so just use it instead of waiting for

45b96bd083Smrg
46b96bd083Smrg (And if something has gone very wrong so that they aren't the same,
47b96bd083Smrg this avoids out-of-bounds reads processing the returned gamma arrays
48b96bd083Smrg by using the size of the arrays we allocated.)

16609113985Smrg xrandr: Fix deleting inactive monitors
16709113985Smrg
16809113985Smrg The following commands did not behave correctly:
16909113985Smrg
17009113985Smrg xrandr --setmonitor empty auto none
17109113985Smrg xrandr --delmonitor empty
17209113985Smrg
17309113985Smrg The second command failed with "No monitor named 'empty'". This
17409113985Smrg occurred because get_monitors was invoked with its get_active argument
17509113985Smrg set to False, which caused it to not retrieve inactive monitors. Thus,
17609113985Smrg inactive monitors could not be deleted.
17709113985Smrg
17809113985Smrg Fix this bug by invoking get_monitors (and, thus, XRRGetMonitors) with
17909113985Smrg get_active = False, thus enabling deletion of disabled monitors.

18709113985Smrg xrandr: fix crash if some modes cannot be found
18809113985Smrg
18909113985Smrg When printing modes in "xrandr -q", check to see if we failed to look up
19009113985Smrg mode information from a mode XID. Previously the command would
19109113985Smrg dereference null and crash if the mode information could not be found.
19209113985Smrg
19309113985Smrg When using an external HDMI monitor on a laptop with a Skylake Intel
19409113985Smrg graphics chipset "xrandr -q" occasionally is unable to look up mode
19509113985Smrg information for some of the modes. It seems likely there is some other
19609113985Smrg sort of library or driver issue causing these lookup failures, but this
19709113985Smrg change to xrandr at least prevents it from segfaulting.

22109113985Smrg init the name to 0
22209113985Smrg
22309113985Smrg There are a few conditions where coverity finds a use of an uninitialized
22409113985Smrg field of the name_t struct. These are rather messy combinations of conditions,
22509113985Smrg so let's go with the simple solution here and just init everything to 0.
22609113985Smrg This may still have side-effects but at least they'll be more obvious than the
22709113985Smrg previous "use whatever memory is leftover from breakfast".
22809113985Smrg
22909113985Smrg This patch also adds a missing init_name(), much for the same reason.

36009113985Smrg xrandr: suppress misleading indentation warning
36109113985Smrg
36209113985Smrg When printing out rotations, we print a space before any item other than
36309113985Smrg the first, and set `first = False` in each block where we print.
36409113985Smrg However, this is done in the same line as the conditional that checks if
36509113985Smrg first is set, which may give the impression that the assignment is also
36609113985Smrg under the conditional. This is not the case, and recent GCC warns about
36709113985Smrg this.
36809113985Smrg
36909113985Smrg Move the assignment to after we print the value we want to print, which
37009113985Smrg (1) doesn't mislead about the indentation, and
37109113985Smrg (2) makes logical sense as the _next_ entry is what won't be the first.

4424a908991Smrg Mark all CRTC as currently unused for second picking CRTC pass
4434a908991Smrg
4444a908991Smrg We perform two passes over the CRTC in order to find the preferred CRTC
4454a908991Smrg for each enabled output. In the first pass, we try to preserve the
4464a908991Smrg existing output <-> CRTC relationships (to avoid unnecessary flicker).
4474a908991Smrg If that pass fails, we try again but with all outputs first disabled.
4484a908991Smrg However, the logic to preserve an active CRTC was not disabled along
4494a908991Smrg with the outputs - meaning that if one was active but its associated
4504a908991Smrg output was disabled by the user, then that CRTC would remain unavailable
4514a908991Smrg for other outputs. The result would be that we would try to assign more
4524a908991Smrg CRTC than available (i.e. if the user request 3 new HDMI outputs on a
4534a908991Smrg system with only 3 CRTC, and wished to switch off an active internal
4544a908991Smrg panel, we would report "cannot find CRTC" even though that configuration

602f3dfa9d3Smrg xrandr: use full range for gamma table generation

604f3dfa9d3Smrg Calculate gamma table using full [0,65536) range and do not make any
605f3dfa9d3Smrg assumptions about relation of gamma table size and significant bits.
606f3dfa9d3Smrg
607f3dfa9d3Smrg Gamma table size has nothing to do with number of significant bits in hardware.
608f3dfa9d3Smrg In particular we are dealing now with gamma table that has 17 entries and 8
609f3dfa9d3Smrg bit precision, there are other GPUs with 10 bit precision and less than 256
610f3dfa9d3Smrg entries using partial linear approximation. Deriving assumed gamma table
611f3dfa9d3Smrg significant bits from size of gamma table leads to incorrect calculations and
612f3dfa9d3Smrg loss of precision. Also XRandR specification never mentions that gamma tables
613f3dfa9d3Smrg need to be power of 2.

763da4266ffSmrg Bug 56923 - Make command line options consistent (single vs double dash)
764da4266ffSmrg
765da4266ffSmrg Most of xrandr's command line options follow the system of single
766da4266ffSmrg dashes for single character options (e.g. "-v") and double dashes for
767da4266ffSmrg long options ("--version"). The only exceptions are "-display" and
768da4266ffSmrg "-help", most likely for historical reasons. To make the behavior
769da4266ffSmrg consistent across all options, the following patch adds "--display"
770da4266ffSmrg and "--help" as alternatives to the current inconsistency. The man
771da4266ffSmrg page got updated as well, recommending double-dash variants for both
772da4266ffSmrg options. The old behavior is still supported, so the patch should not
773da4266ffSmrg break any existing usage/script.

805da4266ffSmrg Print spaces between XA_ATOM property values
806da4266ffSmrg
807da4266ffSmrg Commit b26fd532b3dab222956ea27eef4e41345978b5b2 redid how xrandr prints
808da4266ffSmrg properties. It neglected to put spaces between the values of XA_ATOM
809da4266ffSmrg properties, so they all run together. For example,
810da4266ffSmrg
811da4266ffSmrg audio: auto
812da4266ffSmrg supported: force-dvioffautoon
813da4266ffSmrg
814da4266ffSmrg Fix this by putting a space after each atom name. In addition, some drivers
815da4266ffSmrg create property values with spaces in them, so put commas between entries to
816da4266ffSmrg disambiguate. For example,
817da4266ffSmrg
818da4266ffSmrg Broadcast RGB: Automatic
819da4266ffSmrg supported: Automatic, Full, Limited 16:235
820da4266ffSmrg
821da4266ffSmrg Do the same for properties with multiple valid ranges.

930966b534aSmrg
931966b534aSmrg There are piles of places in the code where a variable shadows either another
932966b534aSmrg variable or a global function:
933966b534aSmrg
934966b534aSmrg xrandr.c:545:35: warning: declaration of ‘index’ shadows a global declaration [-Wshadow]

946966b534aSmrg xrandr.c:3243:20: warning: declaration of ‘mode’ shadows a previous local [-Wshadow]
947966b534aSmrg
948966b534aSmrg 'index' and 'gamma' are C library functions:
949966b534aSmrg
950966b534aSmrg index (3) - locate character in string
951966b534aSmrg gamma (3) - (logarithm of the) gamma function
952966b534aSmrg
953966b534aSmrg The rest of these are either variables or function parameters.
954966b534aSmrg
955966b534aSmrg When possible, move the declaration of a variable into the block where it is
956966b534aSmrg used, including in cases where the same variable is used in multiple blocks but
957966b534aSmrg the later block doesn't depend on the value from the earlier block.
958966b534aSmrg
959966b534aSmrg In a few cases, rename the variable in the outer scope to be more specific (e.g.
960966b534aSmrg output -> config_output) so the more generic variable in the inner scope (e.g.
961966b534aSmrg the 'output' variable used to iterate over all outputs) doesn't have to change.

1159966b534aSmrg Fix as many of these as possible. This introduces one problem:
1160966b534aSmrg XRRSetCrtcTransform takes a non-const char* filter parameter even though it

1190966b534aSmrg    xrandr: fix gamma == 1.0 && sigbits != 8
1191966b534aSmrg
1192966b534aSmrg The gamma-correction lookup table managed through XRR[GS]etCrtcGamma is
1193966b534aSmrg 2^n in size, where 'n' is the number of significant bits in the X Color.
1194966b534aSmrg Each element in the gamma-correction lookup table is a 16:16:16 X Color
1195966b534aSmrg (i.e., in the range [0,65536) ). The significant bits of each component
1196966b534aSmrg of each element in the lookup table are programmed into the hardware
1197966b534aSmrg lookup table. Meaningful values in the gamma-correction lookup table
1198966b534aSmrg are thus in the range [0,2^sigbits), where all values are shifted into
1199966b534aSmrg the MSBs (i.e., left shifted by (16 - sigificant bits)).

1252966b534aSmrg
1253966b534aSmrg A typical case for wanting to specify a scale on an output is making your

1255966b534aSmrg Instead of making the user calculate the scaling factors to be specified by

1290966b534aSmrg Include strings.h for strcasecmp
1291966b534aSmrg
1292966b534aSmrg Our minimum requirement for X11 is currently Unix98. Unix98 provides
1293966b534aSmrg strcasecmp in <strings.h>. This commit fixes implicit declarations
1294966b534aSmrg of this function on systems that closely adhere to the standard.

1545f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: get gamma and brightness
1546f8a31ee4Smrg
1547f8a31ee4Smrg Even in verbose query mode, gamma and brigthness were not displayed.
1548f8a31ee4Smrg That's because they are not stored in the server the same way they are
1549f8a31ee4Smrg specified on the command line: they are stored as 256 * 3 u16 while
1550f8a31ee4Smrg the command line is 3 + 1 floats. Still, this is useful info for the
1551f8a31ee4Smrg users, and they don't care about how it's stored in the server.
1552f8a31ee4Smrg
1553f8a31ee4Smrg So we do a regression over the values stored to recover info in the same
1554f8a31ee4Smrg way as on the command line: gamma and brightness.

1563f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: fix maximum gamma set
1564f8a31ee4Smrg
1565f8a31ee4Smrg Gamma is an array of 3 16-bit values. Currently, the maximum value assigned is
1566f8a31ee4Smrg 255*256, which is only 65280. Make sure that when we set the gamma, the maximum
1567f8a31ee4Smrg value is 65535. It's slightly brighter but also helps to avoid kludges to
1568f8a31ee4Smrg detect clamped values when reading back the gamma.

1787f8a31ee4Smrg As an interim measure, replace AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([dist-bzip2]) with
1788f8a31ee4Smrg AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([foreign dist-bzip2]). This will prevent the generation
1789f8a31ee4Smrg of the INSTALL file. It is also part of the 24206 solution.

215362df5ad0Smrg Fix for 64bit: feed a pointer to the right size variable to scanf().
215462df5ad0Smrg
215562df5ad0Smrg XID is unsigned long, however %x in scanf takes a pointer to an unsigned int.
215662df5ad0Smrg Thus with XID xid, a sscanf(..., "0x%x", &xid) will most likely produce the
215762df5ad0Smrg wrong results.

2531a0d3b6eaSmrg Make --auto after --output only affect the output.
2532a0d3b6eaSmrg
2533a0d3b6eaSmrg --auto has two meanings; if presented before any --output flags, it requests
2534a0d3b6eaSmrg that connected-but-disabled outputs be enable while disconnected-but-enabled
2535a0d3b6eaSmrg outputs be disabled. After --output, --auto simply asks that the mode used
