134a908991Smrg Only use the current information when setting modes
144a908991Smrg
154a908991Smrg Before we change the state (e.g. adding a mode or applying one to an
164a908991Smrg output), we query the screen resources for the right identifiers. This
174a908991Smrg should only use the current information rather than force a reprobe on
184a908991Smrg all hardware - not only can that reprobe be very slow (e.g. EDID
194a908991Smrg timeouts on the order of seconds), but it may perturb the setup that the
204a908991Smrg user is trying to configure.

284a908991Smrg Mark all CRTC as currently unused for second picking CRTC pass
294a908991Smrg
304a908991Smrg We perform two passes over the CRTC in order to find the preferred CRTC
314a908991Smrg for each enabled output. In the first pass, we try to preserve the
324a908991Smrg existing output <-> CRTC relationships (to avoid unnecessary flicker).
334a908991Smrg If that pass fails, we try again but with all outputs first disabled.
344a908991Smrg However, the logic to preserve an active CRTC was not disabled along
354a908991Smrg with the outputs - meaning that if one was active but its associated
364a908991Smrg output was disabled by the user, then that CRTC would remain unavailable
374a908991Smrg for other outputs. The result would be that we would try to assign more
384a908991Smrg CRTC than available (i.e. if the user request 3 new HDMI outputs on a
394a908991Smrg system with only 3 CRTC, and wished to switch off an active internal
404a908991Smrg panel, we would report "cannot find CRTC" even though that configuration
414a908991Smrg could be established.)

514a908991Smrg
524a908991Smrg When an output is disabled via the cmdline, we can use that information
534a908991Smrg to prevent assigning the current CRTC to the output and free it up for
544a908991Smrg reuse by other outputs in the first pass of picking CRTC.

188f3dfa9d3Smrg xrandr: use full range for gamma table generation
189f3dfa9d3Smrg
190f3dfa9d3Smrg Calculate gamma table using full [0,65536) range and do not make any
191f3dfa9d3Smrg assumptions about relation of gamma table size and significant bits.
192f3dfa9d3Smrg
193f3dfa9d3Smrg Gamma table size has nothing to do with number of significant bits in hardware.
194f3dfa9d3Smrg In particular we are dealing now with gamma table that has 17 entries and 8
195f3dfa9d3Smrg bit precision, there are other GPUs with 10 bit precision and less than 256
196f3dfa9d3Smrg entries using partial linear approximation. Deriving assumed gamma table
197f3dfa9d3Smrg significant bits from size of gamma table leads to incorrect calculations and
198f3dfa9d3Smrg loss of precision. Also XRandR specification never mentions that gamma tables
199f3dfa9d3Smrg need to be power of 2.

349da4266ffSmrg Bug 56923 - Make command line options consistent (single vs double dash)
350da4266ffSmrg
351da4266ffSmrg Most of xrandr's command line options follow the system of single
352da4266ffSmrg dashes for single character options (e.g. "-v") and double dashes for
353da4266ffSmrg long options ("--version"). The only exceptions are "-display" and
354da4266ffSmrg "-help", most likely for historical reasons. To make the behavior
355da4266ffSmrg consistent across all options, the following patch adds "--display"
356da4266ffSmrg and "--help" as alternatives to the current inconsistency. The man
357da4266ffSmrg page got updated as well, recommending double-dash variants for both
358da4266ffSmrg options. The old behavior is still supported, so the patch should not
359da4266ffSmrg break any existing usage/script.

391da4266ffSmrg Print spaces between XA_ATOM property values
392da4266ffSmrg
393da4266ffSmrg Commit b26fd532b3dab222956ea27eef4e41345978b5b2 redid how xrandr prints
394da4266ffSmrg properties. It neglected to put spaces between the values of XA_ATOM
395da4266ffSmrg properties, so they all run together. For example,
396da4266ffSmrg
397da4266ffSmrg audio: auto
398da4266ffSmrg supported: force-dvioffautoon
399da4266ffSmrg
400da4266ffSmrg Fix this by putting a space after each atom name. In addition, some drivers
401da4266ffSmrg create property values with spaces in them, so put commas between entries to
402da4266ffSmrg disambiguate. For example,
403da4266ffSmrg
404da4266ffSmrg Broadcast RGB: Automatic

537966b534aSmrg gamma (3) - (logarithm of the) gamma function
538966b534aSmrg
539966b534aSmrg The rest of these are either variables or function parameters.
540966b534aSmrg
541966b534aSmrg When possible, move the declaration of a variable into the block where it is
542966b534aSmrg used, including in cases where the same variable is used in multiple blocks but
543966b534aSmrg the later block doesn't depend on the value from the earlier block.
544966b534aSmrg
545966b534aSmrg In a few cases, rename the variable in the outer scope to be more specific (e.g.
546966b534aSmrg output -> config_output) so the more generic variable in the inner scope (e.g.
547966b534aSmrg the 'output' variable used to iterate over all outputs) doesn't have to change.

691966b534aSmrg
692966b534aSmrg Sufficiently new versions of GCC treat string literals as "const char *" by

776966b534aSmrg    xrandr: fix gamma == 1.0 && sigbits != 8
777966b534aSmrg
778966b534aSmrg The gamma-correction lookup table managed through XRR[GS]etCrtcGamma is
779966b534aSmrg 2^n in size, where 'n' is the number of significant bits in the X Color.
780966b534aSmrg Each element in the gamma-correction lookup table is a 16:16:16 X Color
781966b534aSmrg (i.e., in the range [0,65536) ). The significant bits of each component
782966b534aSmrg of each element in the lookup table are programmed into the hardware
783966b534aSmrg lookup table. Meaningful values in the gamma-correction lookup table
784966b534aSmrg are thus in the range [0,2^sigbits), where all values are shifted into
785966b534aSmrg the MSBs (i.e., left shifted by (16 - sigificant bits)).

837966b534aSmrg Add a --scale-from option
838966b534aSmrg
839966b534aSmrg A typical case for wanting to specify a scale on an output is making your
840966b534aSmrg framebuffer be one size and scaling it to fill an output of a different size.
841966b534aSmrg Instead of making the user calculate the scaling factors to be specified by
842966b534aSmrg --scale, add a new option, --scale-from, that lets the user specify the
843966b534aSmrg framebuffer size directly. Compute the appropriate transform to achieve the

1131f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: get gamma and brightness
1132f8a31ee4Smrg
1133f8a31ee4Smrg Even in verbose query mode, gamma and brigthness were not displayed.
1134f8a31ee4Smrg That's because they are not stored in the server the same way they are
1135f8a31ee4Smrg specified on the command line: they are stored as 256 * 3 u16 while
1136f8a31ee4Smrg the command line is 3 + 1 floats. Still, this is useful info for the
1137f8a31ee4Smrg users, and they don't care about how it's stored in the server.
1138f8a31ee4Smrg
1139f8a31ee4Smrg So we do a regression over the values stored to recover info in the same
1140f8a31ee4Smrg way as on the command line: gamma and brightness.

1149f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: fix maximum gamma set
1150f8a31ee4Smrg
1151f8a31ee4Smrg Gamma is an array of 3 16-bit values. Currently, the maximum value assigned is
1152f8a31ee4Smrg 255*256, which is only 65280. Make sure that when we set the gamma, the maximum
1153f8a31ee4Smrg value is 65535. It's slightly brighter but also helps to avoid kludges to
1154f8a31ee4Smrg detect clamped values when reading back the gamma.

1302f8a31ee4Smrg Only the very small or inexistent custom section need periodic maintenance

1309f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: Remove test against RANDR_MAJOR/RANDR_MINOR
1310f8a31ee4Smrg
1311f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr.c uses structures defined in <X11/extensions/Xrandr.h>
1312f8a31ee4Smrg provided by 'libXrandr' package but tests structures availability
1313f8a31ee4Smrg through RANDR_MAJOR/RANDR_MINOR defined in <X11/extensions/randr.h>
1314f8a31ee4Smrg provided by 'randrproto' package.
1315f8a31ee4Smrg
1316f8a31ee4Smrg Sometimes they are not in sync so it's safer to rely on checks made
1317f8a31ee4Smrg by configure script through pkg-config.
1318f8a31ee4Smrg
1319f8a31ee4Smrg In my test case, XRRPanning structure is not defined in Xrandr.h,
1320f8a31ee4Smrg RANDR_MAJOR is 1 and RANDR_MINOR 2 but xrandr.c try to use it anyway.
1321f8a31ee4Smrg (for the record, XRRPanning was added in libXrandr-1.2.91).

1344f8a31ee4Smrg xrandr: make --query really the default option
1345f8a31ee4Smrg
1346f8a31ee4Smrg The manpage states that "--query" is the default action when nothing
1347f8a31ee4Smrg specific is requested. However, some options such as "-display" or
1348f8a31ee4Smrg "--screen" lead to do nothing by default. This makes sure that unless
1349f8a31ee4Smrg something specific is requested, query is done.
1350f8a31ee4Smrg
1351f8a31ee4Smrg This also restores the behaviour of --q1 to the same one as the old

173962df5ad0Smrg Fix for 64bit: feed a pointer to the right size variable to scanf().
174062df5ad0Smrg
174162df5ad0Smrg XID is unsigned long, however %x in scanf takes a pointer to an unsigned int.
174262df5ad0Smrg Thus with XID xid, a sscanf(..., "0x%x", &xid) will most likely produce the
174362df5ad0Smrg wrong results.

180662df5ad0Smrg server where everything can eventually be kept in floating point form.

182162df5ad0Smrg Manage transform filters. Use bilinear for non-identity scale.
182262df5ad0Smrg
182362df5ad0Smrg This involved creating a compound transform datatype to hold all of the
182462df5ad0Smrg relevant transform and filter information. Adding arbitrary transforms
182562df5ad0Smrg should be fairly easy at this point.

1959a0d3b6eaSmrg Verify crtc against previous config.
1960a0d3b6eaSmrg
1961a0d3b6eaSmrg When selecting a crtc for an output, it doesn't check for already attached

1964a0d3b6eaSmrg E.g. when changing from a cloned mode the displays won't be split up to
1965a0d3b6eaSmrg different crtcs, but the same crtc will be used, changing the resolution for

2081a0d3b6eaSmrg Support XA_ATOM properties (like TV_FORMAT).
2082a0d3b6eaSmrg
2083a0d3b6eaSmrg Atom properties have lists of valid values that are all atoms, so display
2084a0d3b6eaSmrg those. Also, fetch property data and use that to determine which format new

2117a0d3b6eaSmrg Make --auto after --output only affect the output.
2118a0d3b6eaSmrg
2119a0d3b6eaSmrg --auto has two meanings; if presented before any --output flags, it requests
2120a0d3b6eaSmrg that connected-but-disabled outputs be enable while disconnected-but-enabled
2121a0d3b6eaSmrg outputs be disabled. After --output, --auto simply asks that the mode used
2122a0d3b6eaSmrg for the output be automatically selected. Mixing these two operations is not
2123a0d3b6eaSmrg a good default.

2336a0d3b6eaSmrg Restructure RandR 1.2 support to handle relative placement.
2337a0d3b6eaSmrg
2338a0d3b6eaSmrg Ok, really, this is mostly a rewrite of the RandR 1.2 support. First,
2339a0d3b6eaSmrg collect commands from command line arguments. Next, fill in existing
2340a0d3b6eaSmrg configuration from X server. Calculate new configuration. Apply
2341a0d3b6eaSmrg configuration, if anything fails, revert to previous configuration.
2342a0d3b6eaSmrg
2343a0d3b6eaSmrg Still left -- pure --auto, and --extend/--clone options.
